Medium Format Dilemma

Mamiya UK Forum: General: Medium Format Dilemma
By Jonathan Little on Monday, December 02, 2002 - 10:52 am:

Having recently turned professional, I want (need?) to make the jump from a Nikon 35mm outfit to medium format. My problem is simply one of which medium format.

For travel and location work a 7II would be ideal. Light, portable, large image size, perfect for landscapes etc.

Yet I also do a certain amount of small scale studio work, for which a polaroid back is essential, effectively ruling out the 7II in favour of an RB/RZ67 (for lots of reasons I also dislike the 6x6 format, so they get ruled out as well). Only I have no desire to hump one of those cross country for travel assignments.

All of which suggests to me at any rate that maybe a 645 is the perfect compromise. Portable enough to travel with, and yet with the facility for interchangeable backs, so covers both bases.

Trouble is, much of what I read suggests that everyone from PR type clients to glossy magazine publishers look down on 645 as not being a big enough step-up from 35mm (despite my calculation that if printed full frame across a magazine DPS, more of a 645 image will be retained than even a 6x7, and for only slightly less magnification to reach that size).

Can anyone out there give me the benefit of their intellect / wisdom / experience on this dilemma from the real life world of work?? And yes, cost constraints totally rule out buying both a 7II AND RB/RZ67.

Thanks,

Jonathan
